About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Fire System Designer/Estimator to join our Christchurch based fire protection team.
This role is responsible for designing compliant fire protection systems and preparing accurate estimates for commercial & industrial, projects across Aotearoa.
You’ll work closely with consultants, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure all designs meet NZ standards and deliver safe, cost‑effective outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Fire System Design
• Produce detailed designs for:
• Fire sprinkler systems
• Fire alarm and evacuation systems
• Special hazard systems (e.g., gas suppression, foam, water mist)
• Prepare CAD/Revit drawings, hydraulic calculations, block plans, and system schematics.
• Ensure all designs comply with:
• NZ Building Code
• NZ Standards (e.g., NZS 4512, NZS 4541, NZS 4515, NZS 4510)
• Acceptable Solutions (C/AS1–C/AS7)
• Relevant fire engineering reports.
• Liaise with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), building consent authorities, and independent qualified persons (IQPs).
• Conduct site inspections to verify design assumptions and installation conditions.
Estimating
• Prepare accurate cost estimates for fire protection systems, including materials, labour, subcontractors, and equipment.
• Review tender documents, architectural drawings, and specifications to determine scope.
• Develop bills of quantities, pricing schedules, and tender submissions.
• Identify value‑engineering opportunities and propose cost‑effective alternatives.
• Support the sales and project teams during tender evaluations and negotiations.
Project & Technical Support
• Provide technical guidance to project managers, installers, and subcontractors.
• Assist with design revisions, RFIs, and compliance documentation.
• Support commissioning and handover processes as required.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design platforms.
• Strong understanding of NZ fire protection codes, standards, and compliance pathways.
• Ability to perform hydraulic calculations using industry‑standard software.
• Competence in reading and interpreting architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
Professional Qualifications
• Relevant engineering, drafting, or fire protection qualification
• Experience working within the New Zealand construction or fire protection industry.
Soft Skills
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
• Practical problem‑solving approach with a focus on compliance and safety.
